The E-Ink Kindle would target a different user demographic than the popular Kindle Fire, which is designed for tablet-style activities like gaming and video streaming–two uses poorly suited for today’s non-backlit, monochrome e-paper displays with very low refresh rates. It was that blue-white glow found in uncorrected white LEDs, not the warm light on off-white that most people associate with books by lamplight. But, of course, the e-ink screen is in fact grey and dark grey, not black on off-white, as paper is, so a cooler light may actually work better. At any rate, they are apparently sensitive to these issues and looking into it. An e-Ink screen might make the Kindle better to readers of children’s books, graphic novels, and textbooks.

Coldewey, who lives in Seattle near Amazon’s offices, writes: “The device I saw was crudely camouflaged in a sort of cardboard enclosure, but the screen was clearly visible. With a tap, a slider popped up on the screen, and as it was dragged to the right, the screen lit up evenly with a rather cool light. In the dark, it was plainly noticeable as a glow, and in uneven light — say, shade or a shuttered room — the slight illumination made the screen much more readable.” As for the shape of the device, it was impossible to tell, wrapped as it was in its little cardboard box. But the size appears the same, and the whole point of purchasing the light-guide company was to get the team and their patents, which essentially laminate the light diffusion layer right onto the screen without adding much in the way of depth or interfering with the touch system.

The new Kindle doesn’t look like it’s going to address all of the issues with this kind of device, but the improved display will definitely set it apart from its rivals. We’ll know for sure when it comes out later this year, the future may bring hybrid, switchable displays that offer the best of both worlds in tablet-oriented tasks such as games and video; and monochrome e-ink for reading, predicts IDC analyst Bob O’Donnell.

“You can select 3D viewing in the Quality settings (click on the gear icon) on the YouTube player, then pop on your 3D glasses and see YouTube in another dimension,” YouTube said in a blog post.

How it works?

YouTube uses such characteristics as color, spatial layout and motion to estimate a depth map for each video frame, helped by machine learning from true 3D videos, then creates stereo left-right images. Google has been able to apply its cloud computing infrastructure to apply the 3D conversion process to the breadth of videos on the site.

In order to switch over to the 3D view, users must click the gear icon in the toolbar of the video. If the video has been converted over to 3D already, an icon will appear to the left of the gear icon and switch the video to the 3D view when clicked. The user can click the 3D icon a second time to bring up a variety of viewing options.

Of course, viewers of 3D YouTube videos will need inexpensive 3D glasses or 3D capable hardware to take advantage of the new feature.

The Google[x] group who has built Project Glass is choosing to share the information, photos, and video on the product now in hopes of receiving feedback and input to help shape the model. The page also features a video displaying what the world might look like through Project Glass lenses, and just how the glasses could be used in every day life.

According to the post, the Google glasses own a minimalist design with a microphone and partly-transparent video screen that places information over the view from the users’ right eye.

The film reportedly showed one user being reminded he has a date that evening when he looks up at a blank wall, and then warns him that there is a 10 per cent chance it will rain when he looks out of the window.

An alert pops up when a friend sends a text asking if he wants to meet up later in the day. When the user dictates a reply a microphone symbol is superimposed over much of his view.

Other functions include Google Maps showing a route to the wearer’s destination with small arrows keeping him on track, the ability to take a photo of what he is looking at with an option to share it with friends, and a video conference service.

There had been lots of speculation about the project with some reports describing it as an “open secret”, but this is the first time Google has confirmed details of what it was working on.

The glasses will not go on sale until later this year, but Google employees will be testing them in public over the next few months. The New York Times suggested they could cost between $250-$500.

The new iPad will be available on March 16 in the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Switzerland, UK and the US Virgin Islands.

Sources say the company has chosen the first week in March to debut the successor to the iPad 2, and will do so at one of its trademark special events. Japanese blog Macotakara brings us a photo, which shows a 9.7-inch LCD panel. It is said that this panel is said to be a 2048×1536 high-resolution display set for inclusion in the iPad 3 made by Sharp. The panel shows three ribbon cables connecting the display to its circuit board, in line with a previously-leaked photo of a claimed iPad 3 panel. The iPad 2 panel only utilizes two ribbon cables, with the additional cable on the new panel thought to be required to support its higher resolution.

Meanwhile, The New York Times also presents its own sources – the iPad 3 will be equipped with a faster processor and a “truly amazing” screen, and it is identical in appearance to the iPad 2.

An Apple employee said that the version of the new iPad that is being tested inside the company is “essentially the same size and shape as the iPad 2,” with an improved and “truly amazing” screen. The tablet will include a faster processor, said the employee, who did not want to be identified because Apple is not fond of leaks.

The report also points out slight differences to the locations where the iPad’s rear camera and LCD display mount to the rear casing. While those changes obviously do not offer any evidence of enhancements for the components themselves, they do suggest that Apple has at least tweaked their designs from the current iPad.

According to other sources of The Verge, the Apple A6 chip that will be installed in the iPad 3 will not be quad-core but will be dual-core instead. The CPU, Apple’s A6, will be more powerful than the A5 chip found in the iPad 2.

The report also says that the iPad 3 will feature a true iPad Retina Display which will feature 2048 x 1536 resolution. As for the design, it will apparently be very similar to the iPad 2 but will be about 1mm thicker.

To the study of the video, some analysts said that Windows Phone Mango is a very stable platform, compared with the Android run faster, smoother response. iBooks Author allows anyone to create interactive iBooks with text, video, images and more. As Apple mentioned during their media event, the availability of such a robust tool to make electronic books has been lacking. And iBook Author can export projects in a number of different formats, including iBook format, PDF and text. These additions are believed to add new functionality and interactivity to the format as shown during today’s media event. “If you’ve ever been involved with creating e-books before, you know this is a total miracle in terms of time savings,” Apple told the audience in NYC. Major publishers, however, are not the only ones who can create e-textbooks. A new Mac App Store app, iBooks Author, allows educators and smaller publishers to create their own books for inclusion in the iBookstore. That can be a textbook, cookbook, history book, or more. Text and images can be added by dragging and dropping, while movies, interactive photo galleries, Keynote presentations, and more can be included via Multi-Touch widgets.

Apple also plans to expand beyond the college level, offering the iTunes U app to K-12 educators. “The all-new iTunes U app enables students anywhere to tap into entire courses from the world’s most prestigious universities,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. All three of the apps discussed in Thursday’s announcement—iBooks 2, iBooks Author, and iTunes U—are free to download from their respective app stores. Apple clearly wants to make the effort accessible to everyone, including instructors.
