Samsung revealed its Galaxy Note 2 on Aug 29 in Berlin, Nokia and Motorola revealed new phones at back-to-back press events in New York on yesterday. They appeared hurrying to show them off before Apple makes its iPhone announcement next week. It’s shaping up to be a cold fall for smartphone makers.

The furious PK between iPhone 5 and other smartphones

Nokia announced the Nokia Lumia 920 and the Nokia Lumia 820, the first devices in Nokia’s Windows Phone 8 range. The Lumia 920 is curved 4.5-inch PureMotionHD+ display screen, dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor, wireless charging and a 2,000mAh battery. Nokia hasn’t stopped there as they have also put their PureView camera technology into the Lumia 920. While the Nokia Lumia 820 has the same unibody look and feel as the high end Lumia smartphones, it comes with an exchangeable shell design, which makes it possible to select from a range of colors and add wireless charging.

Motorola’s three new Droid Razr smartphones, the Droid Razr M, the Droid Razr HD, and the Droid Razr Maxx HD, are unveiled at a press conference. The phones are the first from Motorola as a part of Google. The Droid Razr M has a 4.3-inch qHD (960 x 540) Super AMOLED Advanced display coated in Gorilla Glass and packs a dual-core Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 processor coupled with 1GB of RAM. The handset also boasts an 8-megapixel rear camera capable of recording 1080p video, a 0.3-megapixel front-facing shooter, GSM / UMTS / HSPA+ global roaming and 8GB of internal storage, along with a microSD slot. In addition, this smartphone has an NFC radio. The Droid RAZR HD unveiled with a lightly-skinned version of Android 4.0.4 (upgradeable to Jelly Bean) and bearing a 4.7-inch 720p display, dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor clocked at 1.5GHz, 8-megapixel rear camera, NFC, as well as a massive 2,500mAh battery. While the HD Maxx has a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED HD screen, 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, LTE, an upgraded 3,300mAh battery and an 8-megapixel shooter, but it upgrades the onboard storage to 32GB. At 67.9mm wide, 131.9 mm long and a mere 9.3mm thin — less than 1mm thicker than the standard HD — it’s a relatively small one.

iPhone 5 is speculated to have 4-inch screen, 12 mega pixel camera with LED Flash, a new metal body named Liquidmetal, in-cell touch panels, LTE and NFC connectivity, 4G LTE, a better battery and iWallet.

Whether Apple can survive without Jobs, let’s wait and see.
