RIM BlackBerry PlayBook Supports Android Apps

Research in Motion (RIM) announces that BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet OS will support not only Android apps, but also native C/C++ code.

In order to make the Android apps run on BlackBerry PlayBook OS, users will have to download two “app players” to provide an emulation environment for BlackBerry Java and Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) apps.

Developers are able to port the Android app over to the BlackBerry PlayBook OS by repackaging the app and adding a code sign, and then the apps will be submitted to the BlackBerry App World for purchase.

The PlayBook tablet from Research in Motion, priced from $499, will go on sale April 19 at Best Buy stores. The 7-inch touchscreen device has attracted positive attention from market.
