After the long waiting, we do not receive the so-called iPad 3 or iPad HD. However, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook still revealed the “new iPad” at an event in San Francisco today. This new iPad still brings us some exciting new improvements.
As predicted, the new iPad features a stunning retina display – as on the iPhone 4 and 4S you can’t distinguish individual pixels and the resolution is a stunning 2048 x 1536 pixels. As expected, it’s the same 9.7-inch size.
New Apple A5X Processor
The new iPad is equipped with an Apple A5X ARM-based unit, which has quad-core graphics but is still a dual-core based unit. It is said that the A5X is “twice as fast” as Tegra 3,and offers four time the graphics performance of Nvidia’s chip.
The third-generation iPad includes a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera that utilizes the same optics system that debuted in the iPhone 4S. The front-facing camera remains an unimpressive 0.3 megapixel camera capable of VGA quality images.
You can now record 1080p video on the iPad 3 with an iSight. The rear camera has a 5-element lens plus auto face-detection, auto focus lock and image stabilisation for video. Once again there’s tap-to-focus as well as photo and video geotagging.
Support 4G LTE
The new iPad support 4G LTE, which will be available in the US from both AT&T and Verizon.
With 4G LTE, the new tablet will provide up to 73 Mbps download speeds. Optional software can turn your tablet into a personal hotspot for up to five devices.
It’s not quite Siri. You can type or just tap it, speak into your iPad, and it’ll type what you have to say. It will support U.S., U.K., and Australian English, French, German and Japanese voice dictation.
New iPad Battery Life
The new iPad delivers the same battery life as the iPad – that’s 10 hours – with a 9 hours if you’re using LTE – the same it promised for 3G. LTE is a big power drain, so that’s an impressive stat.
New iPad Dimensions and Dock Connector
The new iPad is 9.4mm thick and 652g in weight (662g for the Wi-Fi+4G version) – the footprint is 241 x 186mm. As before, there’s still the 30 pin dock connector.
New iPad Price
The new iPad comes in the usual three standard memory variants – 16, 32 and 64GB.
For Wi-Fi only models: 16GB for $499, 32GB for $599 and 64GB for $699.
For Wi-Fi + 4G: it’s $629, $729 and $829 respectively.
The iPad 2 will remain on sale in a 16GB version for $399 (Wi-Fi) and $529 (Wi-Fi+3G).
The new iPad will be available on March 16 in the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Switzerland, UK and the US Virgin Islands.
